Childbirth Hypnosis / HypnoBirthing® (the Mongan Method) for Labor Management

What is Childbirth Hypnosis or “HypnoBirthing®” (the Mongan Method)?

HypnoBirthing® (the Mongan Method) is a unique method of preparing for childbirth that focuses on creating a gentle, natural childbirth, enhanced by relaxation, visualization, and self-hypnosis techniques. HypnoBirthing® encourages a calm, peaceful, and natural pregnancy, birth, and bonding experience for families.

HypnoBirthing® (the Mongan Method) is based on the idea that if the mother is prepared and relaxed, childbirth and labor do not necessarily need to be painful. Women are helped to gain an understanding that their pain is caused by constrictor hormones, created by fear, and to learn to release fear and create endorphins. Expectations of long, painful labor can then be erased and replaced with expectations of a more comfortable birth.

HypnoBirthing® (the Mongan Method) does not guarantee a painless birth, however, many mothers do report having a relatively pain-free birth or one that they were able to manage easily. When the fear that is the root cause of labor pain is eliminated, birth can be accomplished more comfortably in a shorter period of time.

Five personalized individual sessions are done to educate the couple in the birth experience, remove fears, teach breathing techniques, relaxation before and during birthing, visualization, self-hypnosis, hypno-anesthesia, and promoting a positive pregnancy and a healthy baby. The mother-to-be will learn to work in harmony with her body and baby which will allow her to have a shorter more comfortable labor.

HypnoBirthing statistics according to the HypnoBirthing® Institute:

  • 12% of HypnoBirthing mothers chose to birth in the comfort of their homes. The national average is less than 1%.
  • 6% of HypnoBirthing mothers chose to birth in freestanding birth centers. The national average is less than 1%.
